Lehigh Acres, FL – A 59-year-old woman has been arrested following what investigators described as a suicide pact gone wrong, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded Monday night to a home in the 700 block of Almelia Street East after receiving a report of a possible suicide attempt. When they arrived, they found the caller and two other adults suffering from injuries. Deputies immediately rendered medical aid before transporting all three to a local hospital.

Investigators say Barbara Bates, 59, allegedly cut two family members, waited about 40 minutes, then injured herself before calling 911. Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit later determined the family had planned a suicide pact.

All three survived and were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.

Based on the investigation, Bates has been charged with two counts of attempted premeditated murder and one count of aggravated child abuse.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that resources remain available for anyone in crisis or struggling with mental health issues.
