Bishopville, SC – Two 17-year-old males were taken into custody Thursday afternoon after an armed carjacking in Bishopville led to a multi-county police chase, according to Bishopville Police Chief J.D. Dellinger.
At around 12:49 p.m., officers responded to reports that two armed suspects approached a woman in the parking lot of the Food Lion grocery store and allegedly stole her vehicle at gunpoint. The suspects fled the scene in the stolen car.
According to police, deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office later spotted the vehicle traveling on Interstate 20. When officers attempted to stop it, the suspects led them on a pursuit that stretched through Lee, Sumter, and Kershaw counties.
The chase ended near Thomas Sumter Academy in Sumter County, where the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. With assistance from bloodhounds with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, both teens were found and taken into custody without incident.
The suspects have been booked into the Sumter Detention Center and charged with carjacking and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Chief Dellinger thanked multiple law enforcement agencies for their coordinated response, noting that additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
