Tonganoxie, Kan. – Roads near Tonganoxie and Easton may be underwater by Thursday night as Stranger Creek surges past flood stage, prompting an extended flood warning across parts of Leavenworth and Atchison counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, the creek near Tonganoxie is expected to rise above its 23-foot flood stage late Thursday morning and crest around 26.3 feet by this evening. Flooding could impact County Highway 6 roughly 3 miles east of Tonganoxie before waters begin to recede by Friday morning.
In Easton, moderate flooding is forecast as Stranger Creek climbs above its 17-foot flood stage this afternoon, cresting near 20 feet just after midnight. Local officials warn that by that point, several key routes—including First Street, 231st Street, and portions of Highway 192—may be closed. Residential areas east of 231st Street and a nearby campground also face flooding risks.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and heed barricades. “Turn around, don’t drown,” remains the top advice, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
Flood warnings remain in effect through Saturday morning. Additional alerts may be issued if rainfall continues or river levels fluctuate.
