Jackson, Mississippi – A fast-moving thunderstorm packing 60 mph wind gusts is threatening parts of central and southwestern Mississippi Wednesday afternoon, with damage to roofs, siding, and trees likely as the system tracks through Hinds, Claiborne, and Copiah counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the severe storm was located near Learned at 3:04 p.m. CDT and is pushing southwest at 20 mph. The warning remains in effect until 4 p.m. CDT for northeastern Claiborne, southwestern Hinds, and northwestern Copiah counties.

Communities in the storm’s path include Learned by 3:10 p.m., Utica by 3:15, Newman at 3:30, Reganton at 3:35, and Carpenter shortly after at 3:40 p.m. Residents in these areas are urged to shelter in interior rooms away from windows and avoid outdoor travel.

Radar also indicates a minimal hail threat, with possible hail under 0.75 inches in diameter. No tornadoes are expected at this time, but the high winds pose a significant hazard to mobile homes, trees, and unsecured outdoor items.

The warning will expire at 4 p.m., but additional alerts are possible if storms intensify or new cells develop later this evening.
