Lawrence County, IN – A joint drug investigation in southern Indiana has led to the arrest of a Mitchell man accused of dealing large quantities of methamphetamine in Lawrence County and surrounding areas.

According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, investigators received information in early December that Tanner Wessell, 34, of Mitchell, was allegedly involved in methamphetamine distribution. Detectives with the Indiana State Police Drug Enforcement Section, assisted by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, launched a multi-week investigation using various surveillance and investigative techniques.

On December 22, Wessell was observed traveling southbound on State Road 37 from Monroe County into Lawrence County while driving a 2006 Mini Cooper, authorities said. Deputies reportedly observed multiple traffic infractions and initiated a traffic stop near Judah Road, just north of State Road 37.

During the stop, Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Captain Andrew Phillips deployed a K-9 unit, which gave a positive alert for the presence of narcotics, according to officials. A search of the vehicle allegedly revealed approximately 37 grams of methamphetamine, four grams of fentanyl, and a loaded 9mm handgun.

Investigators later obtained a search warrant for Wessell’s residence in Mitchell, where additional evidence connected to alleged drug dealing was seized, authorities said.

Wessell was arrested and booked into the Lawrence County Jail on multiple charges, including possession of methamphetamine with intent to deal, possession of narcotics with a firearm, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. Several charges range from Level 2 to Level 5 felonies under Indiana law.

All criminal defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
