Las Vegas, NV – Residents across Southern Nevada face a dual threat of searing heat and elevated fire danger as the work week begins. Temperatures will climb toward 109 degrees on Monday, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors. Public health officials are urging the public to take immediate precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
According to the National Weather Service, an Excessive Heat Warning is active for the Las Vegas metro area, Henderson, and North Las Vegas until 10 p.m. Monday. In addition, a Fire Weather Watch will go into effect Monday afternoon through the evening for the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon due to gusty winds and low humidity. This combination creates a critical risk for rapid fire spread.
Officials strongly advise against any form of outdoor burning. Southwesterly winds on Monday could gust as high as 31 mph, quickly turning a small spark into a significant blaze. Residents should also secure any loose outdoor furniture or decorations that could become projectiles in the wind. To stay safe in the extreme heat, limit sun exposure, drink more water than usual, and stay inside air-conditioned rooms. Never leave children or pets inside a vehicle, where temperatures can become deadly in minutes.
The oppressive heat is set to linger throughout the week. While Tuesday may see a slight dip to 106 degrees, temperatures will rebound to 110 degrees by Wednesday and for the Juneteenth holiday on Thursday. The extended outlook shows highs remaining in the triple digits into next weekend.
Warnings remain in effect through Monday evening. Continue to monitor local alerts and check on neighbors, particularly the elderly or those with health conditions.
