Las Vegas, Nevada – Hazardous weather conditions are expected across southern Nevada and the Eastern Sierra this week as strong winds and accumulating mountain snow prompt multiple weather advisories.

According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for Lake Mead and Lake Mohave on Tuesday. Southerly winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour, with gusts up to 35 mph, are expected to create 1 to 3 foot waves, resulting in dangerous boating conditions for small watercraft.

Officials warn that sudden gusts and choppy waters could make navigation difficult, particularly near open water and channel areas. High-profile vehicles traveling near lakeshores and along exposed roadways such as U.S. Highway 93 and Interstate 15 may also encounter difficult driving conditions due to crosswinds.

At the same time, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Eastern Sierra above 8,000 feet from Tuesday through Wednesday. Snowfall totals of 3 to 8 inches are forecast between 8,000 and 9,500 feet, with locally higher amounts approaching 12 inches above 9,500 feet.

Blowing snow and reduced visibility are possible at higher elevations, especially during periods of heavier snowfall. Travel impacts may include slick roads, chain or snow tire restrictions, and slower travel along mountain routes such as U.S. Highway 395 and nearby passes.

While lower elevations are not expected to see snow, rapidly changing conditions in the mountains could pose risks for travelers unfamiliar with winter driving. The National Weather Service advises checking road conditions and forecasts before heading into the Sierra.

Boaters, mountain travelers, and outdoor recreationists are urged to take extra precautions, delay trips if possible, and monitor updated forecasts as conditions evolve.

Both advisories highlight the seasonal transition toward more active weather patterns across the region, with officials emphasizing preparedness and caution through midweek.
