Larimer County, CO – Investigators with the Eighth Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) have released new information today after an early-morning officer-involved shooting in Berthoud on November 16. Officials identified the suspect as Matthew David Wright, 34, who was booked into the Larimer County Jail on multiple charges following the incident.
According to Fort Collins Police Services, which is leading the investigation, Wright allegedly fled from deputies after a traffic stop around 2:32 a.m. Sunday near Grand Market Avenue and TPC Parkway. The deputy initiated a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle on Highway 60 just east of I-25. Investigators say Wright then allegedly accelerated toward the deputy, prompting the deputy to fire his service weapon.
CIRT reports that Wright was not struck by gunfire but did sustain minor injuries. He was treated at a nearby hospital before being taken into custody. The deputy was also evaluated for symptoms related to possible injury but was later cleared and determined to be unharmed. An adult passenger in the suspect’s vehicle was not injured.
Wright is accused of several offenses, including vehicular eluding, attempted third-degree assault, reckless driving, driving 40 mph over the speed limit, and driving with a suspended license. Officials emphasized that all charges are accusations, and Wright is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Additional charges may be considered as the investigation continues.
Anyone with information who has not yet spoken to investigators is asked to contact Fort Collins Police Detective Corporal Julia Chenoweth at (970) 416-2645.
