Weld County, CO – A late-night vehicle chase near Wellington ended early Monday after a suspect was found hiding in a field, thanks to collaboration between the Larimer and Weld County Sheriff’s Offices and the use of drone technology.
According to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) requested drone assistance around 12:47 a.m. at Weld County Road 15 and County Road 120. Deputies had attempted to stop a vehicle traveling at dangerously high speeds on Interstate 25 before losing sight of it.
Due to the remote terrain, LCSO sought support from WCSO’s drone team. After flight approval, a WCSO drone operator deployed a drone equipped with heat signature detection, which quickly located the suspect near a fence line covered in tumbleweeds. Deputies from LCSO then moved in and safely took the individual into custody.
Officials said the incident demonstrates how modern drone tools and interagency teamwork can improve emergency response and community safety.
All charges remain allegations, and the suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
