Albuquerque, NM – Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit eastern New Mexico on Sunday, bringing a risk of tornadoes and large hail. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a slight risk warning for areas stretching from east-central to northeast New Mexico. Forecasters predict storms will develop by mid-afternoon and continue through the evening.
According to the NWS, these storms will likely form across the Sangre de Cristo Mountains before moving east. Some may evolve into supercells, capable of producing tornadoes and hail. Although low-level shear isn’t strong early on, it will increase after sunset, raising the tornado threat. Residents in eastern New Mexico should stay alert to changing weather conditions.
Additionally, scattered thunderstorms may develop into slow-moving clusters, producing damaging winds and localized flooding. The severe weather threat is expected to lessen by late evening. The NWS advises people in the region to monitor alerts and take precautions as conditions develop.
