Wichita, Kansas – Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across parts of Kansas later today and continue into the evening, bringing the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms are expected to redevelop along a cold front in central Kansas during the late afternoon before moving southeast across the region tonight.
Forecasters warn that severe weather is likely, with several hazards possible as storms intensify.
The primary threats include damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, large hail up to golf-ball size, and locally heavy rainfall.
Meteorologists also say a strong tornado cannot be ruled out, especially if storms become more organized as they move through the region.
Central Kansas communities including Great Bend, Hutchinson, Pratt, and Salina could see storms develop first during the afternoon hours.
Storms are then expected to move southeast toward Wichita, Winfield, Emporia, and surrounding communities during the evening and overnight hours.
Parts of southeast Kansas, including areas near Eureka, Chanute, and Coffeyville, appear to face the highest severe weather risk, where stronger storms may develop as the system tracks through the region.
In addition to severe weather threats, heavy rainfall may accompany some storms, which could lead to localized flooding in areas that experience repeated rainfall.
Officials urge residents across central and southeast Kansas to stay weather aware throughout the day and evening, as storms may develop quickly and become severe.
Residents should also have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including mobile alerts, NOAA weather radios, and local media notifications.
Having a safe place identified in advance is also recommended in case tornado warnings are issued.
