Laplace, LA – Louisiana State Police have arrested a Hammond man in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian early Friday morning in St. John the Baptist Parish.

According to Louisiana State Police Troop B, 24-year-old Gregory Cohn Jr. was identified as the driver of the Ford F-250 that struck 59-year-old Darius Crump of Laplace along US 61 near Hemlock Drive. The crash happened shortly before 6 a.m. Friday.

Investigators located the truck at a mechanic’s shop and found Cohn at his residence. He was booked into the St. John the Baptist Parish Jail on charges of Hit-and-Run Driving and Obstruction of Justice.

Troopers say Crump was walking southbound in the continuous center turn lane when he was hit by a northbound black Ford F-250 that fled the scene. Crump died from his injuries at the scene.

Authorities are reminding drivers that leaving the scene of a crash is illegal and urging pedestrians to wear bright or reflective clothing when walking near roadways, especially in low-light conditions.

The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Louisiana State Police Troop B at (504) 471-2775 or report anonymously via la-safe.org.
