Eugene, OR – An injured climber was rescued late Thursday night after activating an emergency distress beacon near George Creek in the Three Sisters Wilderness, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
At about 6:30 p.m. on October 31, Lane County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue (SAR) personnel were notified of the beacon and quickly coordinated with McKenzie Fire & Rescue to locate the hiker’s vehicle at the Separation Lake trailhead. SAR teams then began their trek from the valley toward the GPS coordinates in the wilderness area.
Around midnight, rescuers found the injured hiker off-trail and provided emergency medical care, including treatment for possible hypothermia. Once stabilized, the individual was escorted back to safety, officials said.
Authorities remind residents to take precautions before heading outdoors as colder weather sets in. Safety tips include notifying someone of your route, checking weather forecasts, preparing for overnight stays, carrying offline maps, and wearing a life jacket near water.
Lane County Search & Rescue assists in hundreds of missions each year, ranging from mountain recoveries to water rescues. Officials encourage anyone interested in supporting or volunteering to visit the county’s SAR page for more information.
