Eugene, OR – A missing elderly woman was rescued from Kirk Pond Sunday morning after being found nearly submerged in frigid water, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the woman had driven away from a residence in the Alvadore area, west of Eugene, and later wandered from her vehicle off Clear Lake Road.

According to Oregon State Police, an OSP Fish & Wildlife K-9 team was called to assist deputies during the search. Within minutes, K-9 Buck located the woman along the pond’s edge. A state trooper and a search-and-rescue volunteer jumped into the cold water to pull her to safety.

The woman, who was treated for hypothermia, was transported to an area hospital. Officials say her survival was due in large part to the rapid response of searchers and the K-9’s efforts.

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office noted that multiple searches took place over the weekend, including for lost hikers and missing mushroom pickers, underscoring the importance of outdoor safety during colder months.

Officials urge residents to prepare before heading outdoors by letting others know travel plans, monitoring weather, and bringing warm clothing and navigation tools.
