Lake Tahoe, CA – Backcountry travelers in the Sierra could trigger a life-threatening avalanche within minutes as high danger takes hold across the Greater Lake Tahoe region through early Wednesday.

According to the U.S. Forest Service Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee, a Backcountry Avalanche Warning is in effect from 5:30 a.m. Tuesday until 7 a.m. Wednesday for the central Sierra Nevada between Yuba Pass and Ebbetts Pass, including the greater Lake Tahoe area in both California and Nevada. Forecasters warn that significant rain falling on existing snowpack at all elevations is creating widespread instability.

Large natural avalanches are likely, and human-triggered slides are very likely in backcountry terrain. Officials say avalanches may travel farther downslope than usual and could reach areas typically considered safe. The warning applies only to unmanaged backcountry areas, not ski resorts or highways where mitigation work occurs.

Outdoor recreationists are urged to avoid traveling in, near, or below avalanche terrain. Even experienced backcountry users face heightened risk under these conditions. Check detailed advisories at sierraavalanchecenter.org before making any plans.

Dangerous avalanche conditions will persist through early Wednesday morning, and additional updates may be issued if heavy precipitation continues.
