Reno, Nevada – A powerful Sierra storm is set to slam Northern California and the Tahoe Basin this weekend, with whiteout conditions and damaging winds expected to make travel nearly impossible at times.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Winter Storm Watch begins Saturday morning for the Greater Lake Tahoe region and continues through Sunday evening, while Mono County is under the same alert starting Friday evening. Snow totals could reach 6 to 10 inches around lake-level communities, with 12 to 28 inches expected above 7,000 feet. Along the Sierra crest, wind gusts may peak near 90 mph.

In eastern Sierra County and areas like Portola, Loyalton, and Susanville, snowfall could reach 6 to 12 inches above 6,500 feet, with up to 24 inches at higher elevations. Winds up to 40 mph will add blowing snow and reduced visibility, especially Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning.

Highways including I-80, U.S. 50, and Highway 395 could see chain controls, closures, and dangerous travel conditions. Power outages are also possible due to strong winds impacting trees and lines.

Residents and travelers are urged to delay mountain travel, prepare for rapidly changing conditions, and monitor updates. The most hazardous conditions are expected from Saturday evening through Sunday morning, with alerts likely to be upgraded as the storm approaches.
