Reno, NV – A winter weather advisory remains in effect across portions of Northern California and western Nevada, with snowfall expected to impact travel through 11 p.m. Friday. The advisory replaces the previously issued winter storm warning.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, snowfall amounts will vary by elevation. Areas above 5,000 feet could see 2 to 6 inches, with localized amounts reaching up to a foot in higher elevations. Below 5,000 feet, accumulations will be lighter, reaching up to 2 inches.

The Greater Lake Tahoe area could experience 6 to 14 inches of snow, with up to 18 inches along the Sierra crest. Additionally, strong ridge winds could reach 60 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions. Lake Tahoe itself will see southwest winds up to 25 mph, producing waves of 2 to 3 feet.

In Mono County, snowfall will range from 6 to 12 inches along the Sierra crest, with 2 to 6 inches along U.S. 395. Ridge winds are expected to peak at 60 mph, potentially leading to power outages and fallen tree limbs.

Drivers should anticipate slippery roads and possible delays during peak commute times. A brief lull in snowfall is expected late Thursday night into early Friday morning, but below-freezing temperatures may lead to icy conditions.

Officials advise motorists to slow down, use caution, and check road conditions by calling 511 before traveling.
