California–Nevada – A powerful winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow, extreme winds, and dangerous travel conditions to the eastern Sierra and Lake Tahoe region from early Saturday through Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 12 a.m. PST Saturday until 10 a.m. PST Monday for Mono County in California and the Greater Lake Tahoe Area across California and Nevada.

In Mono County, forecasters expect 1 to 3 feet of snow above 8,000 feet, with up to 4 feet possible on the highest peaks. Communities along Highway 395 may see 1 to 4 inches of snow, which could still lead to slick roads and travel delays. Ridgetop wind gusts exceeding 100 mph are possible, raising concerns for blowing snow, power outages, and tree damage.

In the Lake Tahoe region, snowfall totals of 1 to 3 feet are forecast above 7,000 feet, with 4 to 10 inches expected at lake level. Winds could gust over 100 mph along ridgelines, while gusts up to 40 mph and wave heights of 1 to 3 feet are expected on Lake Tahoe, creating hazardous conditions for marine activity.

Officials warn that travel could be very difficult to impossible, particularly on mountain passes and during periods of heavy snow and strong winds. The storm is expected to significantly impact weekend travel in and across the Sierra, including access to ski resorts and backcountry areas.

Light snow showers may continue Friday afternoon ahead of the main storm, potentially adding to travel impacts before conditions worsen overnight.

Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, carry emergency supplies, and check the latest road conditions by calling 511 before departing.

For residents, visitors, and weekend travelers, the warning signals prolonged and potentially dangerous winter conditions across the Sierra through Monday morning.
