Marquette, MI – The National Weather Service (NWS) Marquette is warning residents and travelers across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to prepare for a potentially high-impact winter storm developing Tuesday evening through Wednesday night, just before Thanksgiving.
A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for much of the region, including Ontonagon, Houghton, and Marquette Counties, where forecasters say there’s a 60–90% chance of 12 inches or more of snow between 1 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Thursday. The heaviest snow is expected across the Keweenaw Peninsula and along the Lake Superior shoreline, where gusty winds up to 40 mph could create blowing and drifting snow.
Travel conditions are likely to deteriorate quickly Tuesday night, with low visibility and slick roads persisting through Wednesday. Lake effect snow is forecast to continue into Thanksgiving Day, adding to travel challenges.
The NWS urges residents to stay alert for forecast updates and consider adjusting travel plans ahead of the storm. Preparations should include securing vehicles and emergency supplies before conditions worsen.
