Duluth, MN – Mariners on western Lake Superior are being urged to use caution as hazardous winds and high waves continue through Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.
A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect as wind gusts across the region are expected to reach 25 to 35 knots, with isolated spots near Grand Marais, Grand Portage, and the Outer Apostle Islands facing a 10–30% chance of gale-force winds Wednesday.
Wave heights are forecast to build between 4 and 6 feet in exposed waters, particularly from Grand Portage westward, before gradually subsiding Thursday. Conditions will remain rough for smaller vessels, and the NWS warns that navigation may be hazardous for unprotected mariners and anglers.
Forecasters note that the strongest winds are expected late Tuesday into Wednesday afternoon, with west winds near 30 knots over open waters. Lighter winds and calmer conditions should return by Thursday as the system weakens and moves east.
Boaters are advised to monitor marine forecasts closely and consider delaying trips until conditions improve.
