Marquette, MI – The National Weather Service in Marquette has issued a Gale Warning for much of Lake Superior’s south-central and eastern waters, where northwest winds up to 40 knots and waves of 7 to 12 feet are expected to create dangerous marine conditions today.

The warning is in effect from noon through 10 p.m. Wednesday, covering nearshore and offshore zones from Marquette to Whitefish Point, including Munising and Grand Marais.

Forecasters warn that the powerful winds will generate hazardous waves capable of capsizing small craft, damaging vessels, and reducing visibility on open waters. The most severe conditions are expected this afternoon and evening before winds gradually ease late tonight.

Mariners are strongly advised to remain in port, secure equipment, and avoid travel until conditions improve. The NWS cautions that wave heights may be higher in open or exposed areas of eastern Lake Superior.

Winds are forecast to diminish overnight as high pressure builds into the Upper Great Lakes by early Thursday.
