Duluth, Minn. – Dangerous marine conditions are building across Lake Superior today, with gale-force winds and high rip current risks prompting warnings for boaters and beachgoers from Duluth to Taconite Harbor.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, northeast winds are expected to gust over 30 knots through Sunday evening, producing waves as high as 6 feet in several areas. A Gale Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today for the stretch between Taconite Harbor and Duluth, while Small Craft Advisories extend across the rest of the lake.

In addition to hazardous boating conditions, beaches in Duluth and Superior, including Park Point and Wisconsin Point, face a high risk of rip currents. Officials warn that swimming may be life-threatening, with dangerous surf expected through the evening. Residents are urged to avoid entering the water and to monitor local conditions before heading to the shoreline.

Travelers and boaters should expect difficult navigation, especially near the Twin Ports, Silver Bay, and Grand Marais. Authorities recommend staying in port, securing vessels, and keeping a safe distance from piers and breakwaters.

Warnings remain active until late tonight, with improving conditions expected Monday morning.
