Duluth, MN – Residents in northeast Minnesota should brace for rapidly strengthening winds Monday evening, with gusts expected to reach up to 40 mph near Lake Superior overnight.

According to the National Weather Service Duluth, conditions will shift quickly, starting calm around 3 p.m. Monday before northeast winds increase through the evening. By early Tuesday morning, gusts between 35 and 40 mph are expected across the Twin Ports region, including Duluth, Two Harbors, and Ashland, Wisconsin.

Forecasters warn that the abrupt change could create hazardous conditions for those traveling along the North Shore and for boaters on Lake Superior. The strongest winds are likely to peak between midnight and 4 a.m. Tuesday, September 30.

While no widespread damage is currently forecast, the gusts may cause choppy waters, minor tree damage, and travel difficulties for high-profile vehicles. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items and use caution if driving or working near the lakefront overnight.

The weather service advises monitoring updates, as conditions may shift quickly with the strengthening northeast winds.
