Chicago, Illinois – Swimmers and boaters are being urged to stay out of the water along Chicago and southern Lake Michigan beaches through Friday evening, as dangerous waves and life-threatening currents develop.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, hazardous conditions are expected to intensify starting Wednesday afternoon and continue until Friday, July 31. High waves and strong, unpredictable currents could threaten even experienced swimmers and create treacherous boating conditions from Chicago’s city beaches south to Indiana.
The advisory impacts popular lakefront spots like Oak Street Beach, North Avenue Beach, and areas stretching to Indiana Dunes. Local agencies are warning that rip currents and heavy surf can sweep swimmers off their feet, especially children and less confident swimmers. Boaters may also face rough water and limited visibility.
Officials recommend staying informed with local weather updates, avoiding water activities, and heeding all posted warnings. Visitors should also monitor city beach websites and social media for real-time alerts.
These conditions mark one of the most significant summer hazards for the Lake Michigan shoreline, with incidents similar to the 2021 late July beach closures.
Beach hazard statements are expected to remain in effect through at least Friday evening, with updates possible if weather patterns shift.
