Valparaiso, Indiana – Drivers across Northwest Indiana could face rapidly changing and dangerous travel conditions tonight as lake effect snow intensifies and strong winds whip snow across roadways ahead of the Thursday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Porter County through Thursday morning. Wind-blown lake effect snow is expected to produce widespread slick roads, with total accumulations ranging from 2 to locally 6 inches. The heaviest snowfall is most likely in northeast Porter County, closer to Lake Michigan, where north-northwest wind gusts could approach 50 mph this evening.

Roads, bridges, and overpasses in Portage, Chesterton, and Valparaiso are especially vulnerable to becoming icy and snow-covered in a short period of time. Blowing and drifting snow may sharply reduce visibility, particularly on west-to-east roadways and in open areas. Conditions may vary dramatically over just a few miles, with brief whiteout conditions possible under heavier snow bands.

Gusty winds could also knock down tree branches, creating isolated hazards near roadways and neighborhoods. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility.

Lake effect snow is expected to gradually diminish Thursday morning, but hazardous travel may persist until winds ease and crews can fully treat roads.
