Lake Michigan – Hazardous boating conditions are expected on the nearshore waters of Lake Michigan beginning tonight and continuing through much of the upcoming week, with freezing spray risks increasing over the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago/Romeoville, hazardous conditions for small craft are expected tonight across the Illinois and Indiana nearshore waters of Lake Michigan. These conditions are likely to persist from Saturday through Thursday, posing ongoing risks for smaller vessels operating close to shore.

From Saturday through Sunday, an Elevated Freezing Spray Risk is forecast. Freezing spray occurs when cold air temperatures and strong winds cause lake spray to freeze on contact with boats, potentially adding dangerous weight and affecting vessel stability. This risk is heightened during periods of bitter cold and brisk winds, especially overnight and during early morning hours.

The outlook applies to nearshore zones stretching from Winthrop Harbor to Wilmette Harbor, Wilmette Harbor to Northerly Island, Northerly Island to Calumet Harbor, and from Calumet Harbor, Illinois, eastward to Gary, Burns Harbor, and Michigan City, Indiana.

While specific wind speeds and wave heights were not detailed in the outlook, conditions are expected to be unfavorable for small craft, particularly those without ice protection or experienced crews. Operators of smaller vessels are advised to closely monitor marine forecasts, wear cold-weather flotation gear, and consider postponing trips during the most hazardous periods.

Commercial and recreational mariners should also be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, as prolonged cold can exacerbate icing and reduce maneuverability on open and nearshore waters.

No spotter activation information was included for the marine zones, but mariners are encouraged to report hazardous conditions to local authorities when safe to do so.

Additional marine statements, advisories, or warnings may be issued as conditions evolve through the weekend and into next week.
