Green Bay, WI – Boaters on Lake Michigan are being warned of hazardous conditions beginning late Wednesday night and lasting through Thursday afternoon. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for waters stretching from Sturgeon Bay to Sheboygan.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, south and southeast winds of 10 to 15 knots are expected, with gusts reaching up to 20 knots. These winds will create building waves between 3 and 5 feet, posing risks to smaller vessels.
The advisory is scheduled from 3 a.m. until 4 p.m. Thursday, covering much of the Wisconsin Lake Michigan shoreline. Mariners are advised to consider altering travel plans, as the conditions may make navigation difficult and dangerous.
Officials emphasize that the advisory is particularly important for operators of smaller boats, which are more vulnerable to the combination of high waves and gusty winds. Larger vessels are also encouraged to use caution.
Lakefront residents and marinas in Door County, Kewaunee County, Manitowoc County, and Sheboygan County may notice choppy conditions and stronger-than-usual currents during the advisory window.
The National Weather Service will continue monitoring conditions and issue updates as needed. Residents and mariners can follow the NWS Green Bay office for the latest forecasts.
