Chicago, IL – Dangerous swimming conditions are expected along Chicago and northwest Indiana beaches as powerful waves and rip currents build through Thursday morning. Lakefront visitors could see 3 to 5 foot waves and rapidly changing currents, raising the risk of life-threatening incidents along Southern Lake Michigan.
According to the National Weather Service, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from 1 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday for all Illinois and northwest Indiana beaches, including popular spots from Evanston through Chicago, Gary, and Chesterton. Officials urge swimmers to stay out of the water, as currents may quickly become too strong for even experienced swimmers.
Local agencies warn that the most hazardous conditions are expected this afternoon and evening, with the high swim risk zone stretching from Waukegan to New Buffalo. Lifeguards and emergency crews are on alert for possible water rescues, and beachgoers should obey posted signs and closures. Drivers in lakefront areas may also see road spray and hazardous crosswinds.
If you plan to visit the lake, stay dry and enjoy views from a safe distance. Avoid swimming, paddle sports, or wading until warnings are lifted. Similar alerts last summer led to multiple rescues and close calls, highlighting the need for extra caution during high wave events.
Beach hazard warnings remain in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday, with additional updates possible if conditions worsen.
