Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Ozone pollution surged to unhealthy levels across southern Wisconsin and northeast Illinois Thursday, prompting state officials to warn sensitive groups in cities from Milwaukee and Kenosha to Chicago to take extra precautions through midnight. According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Illinois EPA, the Air Quality Index (AQI) is forecast to hit the Orange category—unhealthy for sensitive groups—with brief periods possibly spiking to Red, meaning unhealthy for all residents.

The alert covers a wide stretch along Lake Michigan, including Sheboygan, Racine, Waukesha, Ozaukee, Walworth, Washington, and Kenosha in Wisconsin, as well as McHenry, Lake, Cook, and DuPage counties in Illinois. Residents with asthma, heart, or lung conditions are urged to keep medications nearby and minimize time outdoors, especially during afternoon and evening hours when ozone levels peak. Active children and adults should avoid strenuous activity outside.

Local air quality agencies recommend running air conditioners instead of opening windows and delaying fueling or vehicle use until after sunset. If coughing or shortness of breath occurs, move indoors immediately.

The air quality threat is expected to improve by early Friday, but another advisory is possible if conditions persist. Stay updated with local agencies for further alerts.
