Fort Wayne, Ind. – Strong winds and a quick cooldown will sweep across northern Indiana Friday as a cold front pushes through the region. The National Weather Service said gusts near Lake Michigan could top 35 mph through mid-afternoon, with most other areas seeing winds up to 30 mph.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, afternoon highs may briefly reach the low to mid-70s southeast of I-69, but much of the region will feel cooler air by evening. Winds will remain breezy into the night before tapering off, ushering in lower weekend temperatures.
By Saturday and Sunday, daytime highs will settle in the mid to upper 60s, with overnight lows dipping into the low to mid-40s. The cooler air could mean chilly mornings across counties from Elkhart to LaPorte, while areas like Warsaw and Marion may struggle to crack 65 degrees during the day.
Travelers should use caution near Lake Michigan, where crosswinds could affect high-profile vehicles on stretches of I-94 and the Indiana Toll Road. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items such as trash bins, patio furniture, and yard decorations to prevent wind damage.
Cooler conditions will hold into early next week, with a slow warming trend expected by Monday. More seasonal September temperatures should return by midweek.
