Milwaukee, WI – Boaters on Lake Michigan are being urged to stay ashore Sunday night as gale-force winds and rough waters continue to create dangerous conditions across the southern part of the lake.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a Gale Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. CDT Sunday, covering open waters from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to Michigan City, Indiana. Forecasters report northwest winds of 25 to 30 knots and waves reaching 7 to 10 feet, creating hazardous conditions for all vessels.

The NWS cautions that strong winds and high waves could capsize or damage small and mid-sized boats and significantly reduce visibility. Mariners are advised to remain in port or seek safe harbor until conditions improve later Sunday night.

Officials emphasize that operating in gale conditions requires experience and properly equipped vessels. Even experienced boaters should take extra precautions due to the lake’s volatile fall weather patterns.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve overnight as winds ease and waves subside heading into Monday morning.
