Green Bay, WI – This morning, a 2.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded east of Sturgeon Bay in Lake Michigan.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was reported to be 39 kilometers (24.2 miles) east-southeast of Sturgeon Bay at roughly 11 kilometers below Lake Michigan’s surface. The earthquake occurred at around 9:19 a.m. on August 2.
Although minor, the earthquake raised concerns among residents in the surrounding areas, especially in Door County. Local authorities and emergency services were alerted, but there have been no reports of significant damage. The USGS confirmed that the earthquake’s epicenter was in the lake, which likely minimized its impact on land.
The National Weather Service in Green Bay highlighted the rarity of such seismic activity in the region. They encouraged residents to report any unusual ground movement or structural damage to local authorities. Despite the low magnitude, even minor earthquakes can sometimes be felt over a wide area, especially in regions unaccustomed to seismic events.
