Waukegan, IL – A boat explosion on Lake Michigan has left two men hospitalized with serious injuries. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, responded to the incident today.
The explosion occurred around 3:00 p.m. on a 25-foot fiberglass hull powerboat approximately two miles northeast of Waukegan Harbor. According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, a good Samaritan transported the two occupants, a 46-year-old man from Washington and a 55-year-old man from Franklin Park, to shore before emergency responders arrived. The injured men were then taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.
Upon arrival, Marine Unit Deputies found the boat engulfed in flames. The unoccupied vessel burned for about 90 minutes before sinking. The Lake Michigan Patrol Boat launched from North Point Marina to assist at the scene.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the Illinois Conservation Police will lead the investigation into the cause of the explosion. No further details have been released at this time.
This incident underscores the importance of safety and preparedness while on the water. Authorities urge boaters to ensure their vessels are in good condition and equipped with necessary safety gear.
