Las Vegas, Nevada – Strong north winds continue to impact the lower Colorado River Valley and surrounding desert regions on Friday, Jan. 9, as a Wind Advisory remains in effect through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, the Wind Advisory remains active until 4 p.m. PST / 5 p.m. MST Friday, Jan. 9, for the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Lake Havasu and Fort Mohave, and portions of San Bernardino County’s Upper Colorado River Valley.
North winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph, creating difficult travel conditions along exposed roadways. Areas impacted include Lake Havasu City, Bullhead City, Laughlin, Needles, Mohave Valley, Oatman, Topock, Hoover Dam, and Desert Hills.
The National Weather Service warns that strong winds may blow around unsecured outdoor objects, down tree limbs, and cause isolated power outages. High-profile vehicles may experience hazardous driving conditions, particularly along north–south routes.
In addition to land-based impacts, rough waves and dangerous conditions are expected on area lakes, including Lake Mead, posing a risk to small craft. Boaters are urged to remain in port and avoid open water until winds subside.
Residents and travelers are advised to secure loose outdoor items, use extra caution while driving, and stay alert for rapidly changing conditions through the Friday afternoon hours of Jan. 9.
