Detroit, Mich. – Hazardous conditions are expected along Lake Huron through Monday as strong winds and large waves trigger a Small Craft Advisory for much of the eastern Michigan shoreline.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, northeast winds of 20 to 25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots will create dangerous boating conditions from Saginaw Bay down to Port Huron. Waves are forecast to reach 4 to 7 feet, with isolated crests near 10 feet, making small craft operation extremely unsafe.
The advisory is broken into zones, with the Outer Saginaw Bay to Harbor Beach under advisory from Sunday morning until midday Monday. Harbor Beach to Port Huron is affected from late Sunday morning through early Monday, while Inner Saginaw Bay is under advisory from midday Sunday until Monday afternoon.
Local marinas in Bay City, Harbor Beach, and Port Huron are urging boaters to remain docked until conditions improve. The Coast Guard also advises securing vessels and avoiding unnecessary travel on the water.
Hazardous conditions are expected to ease gradually Monday afternoon as winds weaken and wave heights subside. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions persist.
