Detroit, Michigan – Mariners on Lake Huron face a high-risk situation beginning Friday afternoon as heavy freezing spray and gale-force winds combine to create dangerous conditions across offshore waters, particularly beyond five nautical miles from shore.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, Heavy Freezing Spray Warnings are in effect from 1 p.m. Friday through 4 a.m. Saturday for Lake Huron waters from east of the Mackinac Bridge to Presque Isle Light. In addition, Gale Warnings cover offshore waters from Presque Isle Light south to Harbor Beach, where northwest winds will increase to around 33 knots with gusts near 37 knots. The strongest winds are expected Friday evening, with peak waves developing shortly after.
Significant wave heights are forecast to reach 9 feet, with occasional waves as high as 13 feet from Presque Isle to Port Austin and Harbor Beach. Heavy freezing spray rates of two centimeters per hour or greater are expected, allowing ice to accumulate rapidly on decks, railings, and superstructures. This level of icing can disable onboard systems and sharply increase the risk of capsizing.
Mariners are urged to remain in port, secure vessels, and avoid offshore routes during the warning period. The most hazardous conditions are expected Friday evening into early Saturday, with additional marine statements possible as conditions evolve.
