Lake Geneva, Wis. — Police arrested a Delavan man after a fatal fentanyl intoxication investigation on North Edwards Boulevard.
According to the City of Lake Geneva Police Department, officers were dispatched around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18 to the 200 block of N. Edwards Blvd. for a report of an adult male who was unresponsive and not breathing.
Callers told dispatchers that CPR was already in progress before emergency responders arrived.
Officers reached the scene within minutes and immediately began assisting with life-saving efforts alongside the Lake Geneva Fire Department. Despite those efforts, the 37-year-old Lake Geneva man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said investigators quickly began examining the circumstances surrounding the death, collecting evidence and interviewing individuals who were present.
Following an autopsy and toxicology testing by the Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office, officials determined that acute fentanyl intoxication was a contributing factor in the man’s death.
During the investigation, John J. McClellan, 22, of Delavan, allegedly admitted to providing drugs that were consumed by the victim prior to the death, according to police.
McClellan has since been confined in the Walworth County Jail and faces charges of:
- First-degree reckless homicide (deliver drugs)
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Resisting or obstructing an officer
Police said the case remains under investigation, and additional charges may be considered as the inquiry continues.
The arrest highlights ongoing concerns surrounding fentanyl and other synthetic opioids, which investigators say remain a leading factor in overdose deaths across Wisconsin.
Such incidents can impact local students, service workers, and young residents in communities like Lake Geneva.
Authorities emphasized that all individuals charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
