MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Thick fog and subfreezing temperatures are making for a treacherous start across southern Wisconsin early Sunday, prompting a Dense Fog Advisory from the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan through 8 a.m. The advisory includes Dane, Rock, Jefferson, Walworth, Green, Iowa, and Lafayette Counties, where visibility has dropped below a quarter mile in some spots.

According to forecasters, temperatures near or below freezing are creating areas of freezing fog, which could lead to slick bridges and overpasses, especially in low-lying areas and rural valleys. The dense fog extends along I-39/90, U.S. 151, and Highway 14, reducing visibility for early commuters and truck traffic.

The NWS urges drivers to use headlights, reduce speed, and increase following distance until conditions improve after sunrise. Fog is expected to lift midmorning as temperatures climb into the upper 40s and light winds return.

Skies will clear by afternoon, setting up a bright but cool fall day across southern Wisconsin. Milder weather returns early in the week before another cool front approaches by midweek.
