Buffalo, N.Y. – Steady lake effect rain showers moved across western and northern New York early Sunday, with the heaviest coverage falling south of Buffalo and northeast of Lake Ontario. Drivers near Watertown and the Tug Hill region saw the most persistent rainfall during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, showers peaked in coverage east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario before daybreak. The bands will weaken into scattered activity through the afternoon, leaving only a chance for isolated rain into the evening hours.

In Erie County, the morning rain may cause ponding on low-lying roads and slow travel along the I-90 corridor. North of Syracuse, Jefferson and Lewis counties could also see reduced visibility in heavier bursts near the Tug Hill Plateau.

Residents are advised to use caution on slick roads and allow extra travel time. While widespread flooding is not expected, localized drainage issues could occur in areas with poor runoff.

Most of the rain will taper off by late afternoon, though a stray shower could still develop into the evening. The National Weather Service noted no additional alerts were in effect but advised monitoring for updated advisories if conditions change.
