BUFFALO, NY — The National Weather Service in Buffalo is urging caution today after wet, heavy snow fell overnight across western New York, particularly south of the city. Additional snowfall is expected through Friday night as lake effect snow continues off Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Forecasters report the greatest totals—ranging from 12 to 18 inches—have accumulated in higher terrain east of Lake Erie, including areas near Springville, Boston, and Perrysburg. Meanwhile, the Tug Hill Plateau east of Lake Ontario is also seeing heavy snow, with 6 to 8 inches possible before the bands weaken this weekend.

Areas outside the main lake effect zones, including Buffalo, Rochester, and Watertown, can expect occasional snow showers and light accumulations of up to 2 inches through Friday morning.

Forecast Highlights:

  • Lake Erie: Heaviest snow south of Buffalo today; lake band gradually drifts southward.
  • Lake Ontario: Tug Hill Plateau sees the greatest accumulations through Friday night.
  • Travel: Hazardous driving in localized heavy bands; near-zero visibility at times.
  • Snow Type: Wet and heavy, making shoveling hazardous due to strain on the heart.

Safety Tips for Shoveling:

  • Take frequent breaks and stay hydrated.
  • Move small loads of snow at a time.
  • Use caution if you have a heart condition or are at risk of overexertion.

Temperatures will remain near freezing, ensuring snow stays heavy and moisture-laden, which may also lead to power outages where snow loads accumulate on trees and power lines.
