Buffalo, NY — Lake-effect snow is expected to redevelop across Western and Northern New York tonight as cold air flows over Lakes Erie and Ontario, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo. Snow showers will begin after 6 p.m. and continue into early Saturday morning, potentially affecting late-night and early-morning travel.
Across the Niagara Frontier and the Buffalo metro area, lake-effect snow off Lake Erie will form later this evening and persist overnight. Forecasters expect snowfall rates to remain below 1 inch per hour, with most areas from Buffalo to Batavia and Lockport seeing 1–2 inches of accumulation by sunrise.
Heavier snow is expected off Lake Ontario, where a stronger band may organize across northern Oswego County this evening before rapidly shifting north into Jefferson County, including Watertown and surrounding communities. Snowfall totals of 3–4 inches are possible in Pulaski and other locations near the core of the band, while surrounding areas are forecast to receive 1–2 inches. The band is expected to weaken overnight as winds shift and drier air moves in.
Although accumulations are modest compared to major lake-effect events, quick bursts of snow may still reduce visibility, particularly along portions of I-81, Route 104, Route 3, and the Lake Ontario shoreline. Slick spots may develop after midnight, especially in areas repeatedly hit by heavier bands.
Forecasters note that band placement often shifts rapidly, meaning snowfall amounts could vary significantly over short distances. Additional updates are expected Saturday as conditions evolve.
