Cleveland, OH – The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a Gale Watch for all Lake Erie waters from Thursday morning through Thursday evening, warning of dangerous marine conditions that could produce waves as high as 12 feet.

Forecasters expect northeast winds of 25–35 knots, with gusts up to 40 knots, beginning early Thursday. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect through 8 a.m. Thursday for nearshore zones between the Lake Erie Islands and Ripley, New York, ahead of the stronger system.

The combination of strong winds and large waves may capsize or damage smaller vessels and severely limit visibility on the open water. Mariners are strongly advised to stay in port, seek safe harbor, or secure their vessels before conditions worsen.

Winds will likely turn northwest late Thursday night into Friday, maintaining choppy conditions across the lake.
