Utica, NY – The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Herkimer and Hamilton counties, warning that heavy lake-effect snow and gusty winds could make Thanksgiving travel treacherous from Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning.

Forecasters say total snow accumulations could reach up to 10 inches, particularly within the most persistent lake-effect bands north of Route 28 and west of Route 30. Wind gusts between 35 and 40 mph will also create blowing and drifting snow, with visibility dropping below a quarter mile at times.

The storm will develop as colder air sweeps over Lake Ontario, forming narrow but intense snow bands across the western Adirondacks. The heaviest snowfall is expected Thursday night through Friday, potentially impacting holiday travel routes including Route 28, Route 30, and I-90.

Officials warn that road conditions may vary sharply across short distances — from near whiteouts to clear skies just a few miles away. Drivers are urged to delay unnecessary travel, slow down on snow-covered roads, and carry emergency supplies, including blankets, water, and a flashlight.

The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through Saturday morning, with additional snow showers possible over the weekend.
