Mercer, PA – Heavy lake effect snow is set to blanket Mercer and surrounding counties starting Wednesday evening, creating dangerous travel conditions through Friday afternoon. Drivers are urged to prepare for hazardous commutes and possible road closures.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow will begin late Wednesday afternoon, with accumulations reaching between 5 and 12 inches by Friday. Winds gusting up to 40 mph could cause whiteout conditions, making travel treacherous along major roads, including Interstate 80. Residents are advised to limit travel and pack an emergency kit if driving is unavoidable.
The heaviest snowfall is expected overnight into Thursday morning, with intermittent breaks possible south of I-80. However, conditions will worsen again later Thursday as snow bands intensify. The storm is also expected to bring freezing rain and icy conditions, adding to the dangers.
The NWS recommends keeping extra food, water, and a flashlight in your vehicle in case of emergencies. Power outages are possible due to high winds and heavy snow on tree limbs. Local authorities encourage residents to monitor weather updates and road conditions by dialing 511 or visiting the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation website.
Temperatures will hover in the mid-20s through Friday, with wind chills making it feel much colder. As snow continues into the weekend, residents should prioritize safety by avoiding unnecessary travel and staying informed about local emergency updates.
Be sure to prepare your home and vehicle for extreme cold and heavy snow. Check in on neighbors, particularly the elderly or those with limited mobility, who may need assistance.
