New York – A Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect early Friday for parts of central New York, with snow showers creating slick road conditions during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, lake effect snow showers will continue through early morning, with an additional 1 to 2 inches of accumulation possible before the warning expires at 7 a.m. EST.
The warning includes Madison, Onondaga, and southern Oneida counties, affecting cities such as Syracuse, Utica, Rome, Oneida, and Hamilton.
Forecasters say snowfall may occur in narrow, shifting lake effect bands, meaning conditions can vary significantly over short distances. Some areas may see bursts of heavier snow while nearby locations experience minimal snowfall.
Roads are expected to remain slippery, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads. Reduced visibility during heavier snow showers could complicate early-morning travel, especially for commuters and school transportation.
Officials advise drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time when traveling this morning. Even modest snowfall amounts can quickly create hazardous conditions when temperatures remain cold.
Motorists who must travel are encouraged to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including a flashlight, food, and water. The latest road conditions are available by calling 511 for state travel information.
The Lake Effect Snow Warning is expected to expire shortly after daybreak, though isolated slick spots may linger beyond that time.
