Philadelphia, PA – A winter weather advisory is in effect as a snowstorm is set to bring hazardous conditions along the I-80 corridor starting this evening. Residents should prepare for slippery roads and limited visibility during their Thursday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory will begin at 4 p.m. today and last through Friday morning. Snowfall accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected, with wind gusts reaching up to 55 mph. These conditions will likely result in blowing snow and drifting, significantly reducing visibility for drivers.
Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the advisory period and keep emergency kits in their vehicles. Areas north of Interstate 80 could see the heaviest snowfall, while southern regions may experience a temporary lull in the storm Thursday morning before snow picks up again later in the day.
This storm marks the beginning of a frigid stretch for Pennsylvania. The five-day forecast indicates continued cold temperatures, with highs barely reaching the mid-30s through the weekend. Lake-effect snow is expected to persist in northern areas, bringing additional accumulations.
Travelers are urged to check real-time road conditions through the state’s 511 service before heading out. Local authorities recommend slowing down and maintaining extra distance between vehicles. Strong winds could also lead to power outages as trees and branches are likely to come down.
Residents can report snow totals and conditions via the NWS Pittsburgh Facebook page or Twitter @NWSPittsburgh.
