Binghamton, NY — Lake effect snow showers are currently sweeping across the Mohawk Valley early this morning, with conditions expected to shift northward throughout the day. A more organized band of snow is forecast to move into northern Oneida County later today, bringing hazardous road conditions and limited visibility.
The snow showers are expected to persist through this evening, affecting Binghamton, Oneida, and other northern areas along the Mohawk Valley. Areas north of the valley, particularly in Oneida County, could see 2-4 inches of snow accumulation. To the south of the Mohawk, drier conditions and partly cloudy skies are expected for most of the day.
Travel impacts will be significant, especially in the northern parts of the valley, where roads are likely to be covered with snow and ice. Reduced visibility will also pose a risk for drivers, particularly as the snow intensity picks up later this afternoon and evening.
Looking ahead, temperatures will remain below freezing throughout the day, with cold air settling in ahead of an arctic front expected to move through Saturday. This front will bring additional lake effect snow showers and much colder temperatures for the region, marking a sharp return to winter conditions.
Residents are advised to monitor road conditions, especially if traveling across Oneida County, and exercise caution as these weather systems bring winter driving hazards. Be prepared for potentially slippery roads and low visibility, especially in the northern Mohawk Valley.
