South Bend, IN – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. EST this evening for much of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan, where lake effect snow and strong winds are expected to cause hazardous travel throughout the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, areas including Elkhart, La Porte, Starke, Kosciusko, Noble, and Steuben counties—as well as Branch and Berrien counties in Michigan—could see an additional 1 to 4 inches of snow before the storm tapers off tonight. Wind gusts up to 35 mph will lead to blowing and drifting snow, especially on open highways and rural routes.

A brief lull in snowfall early this morning is expected to give way to heavier lake effect bands developing through the afternoon, reducing visibility and worsening road conditions. Major routes such as I-69, I-80/90, and U.S. 31 are expected to remain slick, with localized whiteouts possible near the lakeshore.

The weather service advises motorists to delay travel when possible and to keep emergency supplies—including flashlights, food, and blankets—inside vehicles. Those who must drive should reduce speeds and use caution on icy bridges and intersections.

Snow is forecast to gradually taper off later this evening, but temperatures will remain below freezing overnight, keeping roads slick into Monday morning.
