Buffalo, NY – Drivers across western and northern New York should prepare for hazardous winter travel conditions beginning later this morning, as Winter Weather Advisories take effect across multiple counties due to lake-effect snow, strong winds, and rapidly falling temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, lake-effect snow bands will develop today as rain transitions to snow and colder air pours into the region. In Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and southern Erie counties, snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are possible from 10 a.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Saturday, with wind gusts up to 45 mph producing areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Farther north, parts of the Eastern Lake Ontario region, including Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties, could see 4 to 8 inches of snow between 1 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday. Travel in these areas may become difficult, particularly in persistent lake-effect snow bands.

Forecasters warn that temperatures will rapidly fall below freezing between late morning and afternoon, leading to icy road conditions as earlier rain freezes on untreated surfaces. The Friday evening commute is expected to be significantly impacted, with slick roads, poor visibility, and possible delays.

Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches, resulting in isolated power outages, especially in areas experiencing heavier snow and blowing snow.

Officials urge travelers to slow down, allow extra time, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, especially when crossing lake-effect snow bands where visibility can drop suddenly over short distances.

Road conditions can be checked by calling 511 or visiting 511ny.org before traveling.
