East Chicago, IN – A Lake County woman has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a Gary man on July 4, 2024. Officers were dispatched to 3600 Superior Court at approximately 10:30 p.m. after a report of a man being shot. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, Jerome Scott, 35, near the entrance, suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach.
According to the East Chicago Police Department, Scott informed officers that he had been shot while standing next to a vehicle and speaking with an unknown party inside. Medics transported him to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he was pronounced dead early on July 5.
Preliminary investigations revealed that during the conversation, a gunshot was heard, and the vehicle fled the scene. The Lake County Homicide Task Force took over the investigation.
On July 12, 2024, the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office charged 40-year-old Maya D. Washington of Gary, Indiana, with Felony Murder. She is currently in custody at the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Jail.
